Choose either the 8 hour Croom Crusher or the 2-3 hour Croom Crumbler! NEW FOR 2008!The Croom Crusher will be in a Rogaine-Format! Racers will have 8 hours to collect as many paddle, foot, and bike check-points as they can, navigating entirely by map and compass! The Croom Crusher promises to offer a challenging course in beautiful natural areas: single track, double track, paved trail, cross-county, and meandering river travel. Soloists and Teams (2 -3 person co-ed or single sex) can expect great challenges and great fun! Canoes, paddles, PFDs are provided for teams, but personal canoes or kayaks are allowed. Soloists must provide their own boats, paddle, and PFD. YOU CHOOSE the route you take, which points to collect, and how long you want to stay out (maximum 8 hours). The Croom Crumbler will be a TRADITIONAL STYLE Adventure Race on a shorter, MOSTLY MARKED course with about 2-3 hours of biking, running, paddling, challenges, and adventure. Perfect for newcomers or fun-lovers! NAVIGATIONStrong navigation skills are ESSENTIAL for the Crusher and suggested for the Crumbler. Participants should be prepared to: use a compass to determine direction and determine bearings; follow bearings specified distances; use B&W or color USGS Quad/Topographic and/or orienteer maps as well as aerial photographs; follow written instructions; travel along mandatory routes; select their own routes; deal with unpredictable situations and find novel solutions to problems. If you are not familiar or adept with any of these skills, please seek adequate training beforehand. We recommend attending navigation clinics offered by WeCeFAR and Carillon Wellness Center. This means that racers have a set amount of time to visit as many checkpoints as they can. Racers should expect to spend 8 hours on the course. The disciplines will be equally challenging and each will comprise 1/3 of the time on the course (approx 2-3 hours each). The "Modified Rogaine" format includes multiple Mandatory and Bonus Checkpoints (CPs). Teams must collect ALL Mandatory CPs, but can also collect as many Bonus CPs as time allows. ALL bonus and MOST mandatory points will be pre-plotted on maps; teams determine the number, sequence, and route for obtaining the points. We anticipate the top teams will acquire all of the mandatory AND bonus checkpoints within the allotted time. Strategy will be key to acquiring the maximum number of points. Special clinics covering rogaine strategy will be offered summer and fall, 2008 to help racers prepare. The Croom Crumbler will be the traditional AR format on a mostly marked course with some navigation. CUT-OFF TIMESThere is an 8 hour cut-off time for the Croom Crusher. There is no "short course" or "full course" – there is only one course and racers must try to collect as many points within the allotted time. There are no cut-off times for the Croom Crumbler.
